Communicating Thru Sign - Offering Free Basic Sign Language Classes - "Signs of Fall 2013"

Titled “Signs of Fall 2013,” the group is offering free basic Sign Language classes Saturdays (every other week) beginning August 10 through October 19, 2013, from 10 a.m. to Noon at the Carver Branch Library.

Deaf Facilitator. Gwendolyn Faye Hayes teach beginner students the basics of signing which includes alphabets, numbers, basic words, basic conversations and fingerspelling skills.


 

Hearing Facilitator. Tywanna Watley-Dushime teaches intermediate students the fundamentals of signing and interpreting, signing at events, interpreting and translating

Communicating Thru Sign “In the Community” expanded the CTS outreach to local and surrounding community workers, business owners and leaders to participant and be a part of participating in free sign language classes to learn how to communicate with the deaf community in their workplaces.



Communicating Thru Sign welcomed Dr. Kimberly D. Bessix, DDS as the volunteer of the week in the “Signs of Fall 2013” basic sign language class.  Dr. Bessix was guest speaker and student at the August 24, 2013 class.  Dr. Bessix with practices in Baker and Maringouin, LA wants to learn sign language to communicate with her Deaf patients.  Dr.  Bessix recognized the organization’s efforts to increase “awareness about Deaf culture and sign language and to bridge the communication gap between the Deaf and hearing communities.”
